💡 Comprehensive Guide to IP Addresses

1. What is an IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique set of numbers assigned to your device or network. It allows your device to communicate with other devices and services over the internet, acting much like a digital return address for data packets.

2. Public IP vs. Private IP: What's the difference?

There are two main types of IP addresses you should know about:

  • Public IP: This is the address shown above. It is assigned by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and is visible to the websites and servers you connect to globally.
  • Private IP: Also known as a local IP (e.g., 192.168.x.x). This is assigned by your home router to devices running on your local Wi-Fi network and is hidden from the outside internet.
3. What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

Our tool automatically detects your protocol type:

  • IPv4: The older and most common standard, formatted as four numbers separated by dots (e.g., 8.8.8.8). Due to internet growth, we are running out of IPv4 addresses.
  • IPv6: The newer standard, formatted as alphanumeric groups separated by colons. It was created to provide a nearly infinite amount of IP addresses to future-proof the internet. Your ISP determines which protocol you are currently using.
