💡 Understanding Your Pet's Human Age

1. Is it true that 1 dog year equals 7 human years?

No, the "multiply by 7" rule is a common myth. In reality, dogs and cats mature much faster during their first two years of life than humans do. After that, their aging process slows down. We base our pet age calculator on the latest veterinary guidelines (AVMA) which use a non-linear calculation for accuracy.

2. How is the calculation actually done?

It's based on breed size and species:

  • First Two Years: Both dogs and cats age very quickly. A 1-year-old pet is about 15 in human years, and a 2-year-old is roughly 24.
  • Dog Age to Human Years (After Age 2): It depends on size. Small dogs add about 4 human years per calendar year, medium dogs add 5, and large dogs add 6 to 7.
  • Cat Age to Human Years (After Age 2): Cats generally add about 4 human years per calendar year, similar to a small dog. (This assumes an indoor cat).
3. Does size really affect a dog's lifespan?

Yes. Generally, larger dog breeds tend to have shorter lifespans and age faster than smaller breeds. That's why our dog age calculator requires you to specify if your dog is Small, Medium, or Large for accurate results.
